BSF Raises Concerns Over Obstruction of Central Forces by Meitei Mobs in Manipur

Imphal, August 21, 2023: The Border Security Force (BSF) has issued a stern statement addressing the recent incidents of resistance against central security personnel by certain segments of the Meitei community in Manipur. In a meeting with Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhawan, Sonali Mishra, the Additional Director General (ADG) of the BSF, conveyed the challenges faced by security forces due to disruptions orchestrated by local individuals, predominantly women.

The latest incident that spurred these concerns unfolded on August 21, when a convoy comprising approximately 24 vehicles carrying security personnel en route to Lamka was halted by a group led by Meira Paibi, a women’s vigilante organization, in the Bishnupur district. This incident forced the convoy to retreat to Imphal, marking another episode in the ongoing strife between the Central security forces and certain sections of the Meitei community.

Ever since the eruption of ethnic tensions in the state, Central security forces have encountered resistance from the Meitei community, manifesting in a range of actions. These include the propagation of false information and disinformation campaigns, deliberate hindrances to operations, physical harassment, and, regrettably, even military attacks by Meitei terrorist groups.

The primary contention underlying these tensions is the demand for separate administration within Manipur. Advocates of this demand assert that it is the most viable solution to safeguard their community’s interests, conserve their distinct cultural heritage, and establish enduring tranquility within the state. This assertion is accompanied by a call for transparency, justice, and a future untainted by falsehood.

The ongoing tussle between the Meitei community and central security forces underscores the complexity of the situation in Manipur. As both sides continue to grapple with their concerns and demands, the quest for an equitable and peaceful resolution remains at the forefront of discussions. The recent episode serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for dialogue, understanding, and a comprehensive approach to resolving the tensions that have plagued the state.
